busy, boring....

Now that I'm as finished with my paper figures as I can possibly be, I'm back to doing experiments to keep me busy at work. I haven't consistently done experiments myself since last April, so it's nice to actually be doing experiments instead of sitting on the computer playing in photoshop or excel or some other computer program analyzing data.

We had amazing weather over the weekend. While Joe was at work Sunday I took the big bad camera out to learn how to use it's manual settings. I went down to the park a few minutes from us and wandered around taking pictures of the flowers that have already bloomed in this spring-like weather. Here are some of my more favorite photos... let me know what you think!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Yes, it's that time of year again when the buses and metros alternate their bus route number with "Les Amoureux" and everyone attempts grand gestures of love all thanks to the marketing team of Hallmark. Valentine's Day is a nice day to spoil your loved ones; it can also be stressful to find something perfect to give your loved one... especially when you've contracted your 3rd illness in 5 weeks and can't get off the couch/bed to do anything. Seriously, I've had 2 colds and the stomach flu since we got back from vacation! I'm very mad at my immune system...maybe it's getting back at me for getting a flu shot, who knows. All I know is that I spent all afternoon yesterday sleeping and moping....and admiring the flowers Joe bought me for Valentine's Day! Finally, I had a subject to photograph! The flowers and the sunshine gave me an opportunity to play with my new fancy camera that Joe's mom gave us for Christmas. I'm still not quite sure how to use all the manual settings, but here are a couple pictures I took this morning playing around with the morning light in the kitchen.

-the entire bouquet from Joe (yes, the camera manual is in plain view)

-farting around with the camera's aperture settings

Over the years I've become pretty good at taking pictures of flowers...now I just need to figure out how to expand this to better artistic photos of people and scenery as well!

Stephan's Birthday & I almost won the lottery!

Well, we haven't had a party like this, well, probably since Joe's birthday last spring. I have photographic evidence that Stephan took 14 shots...I'm pretty sure he had more than 14 and he was also drinking beer throughout the evening. Somehow he managed to stick around at the bar until midnight! good job Stephan!

-the disgusting shot with Jaggermeister & tabasco...what was Sai thinking?

-Irish Car Bombs from Jen

After our late morning of sleeping in Saturday, I found out that I had actually won 44 francs in the EuroMillions drawing... too bad I didn't have more numbers!!

24 hours of beards, boars & beach! Part 3: Beach in Barcelona

3:45pm: With about an hour left before we absolutely needed to be on the Aerobus from Place Catalunya to the airport for our 6pm flight, Jen and I decided to head to the beach!

-the video I made while hoofing it through the sand

-I caught Jen screaming as the water crashed into her legs

-Wishing I could do this more often!
Going to the beach was really awesome, especially since the beach was closed last March when Joe, Sai, Adrian and I were in Barcelona for a long weekend. The water was a little chilly and getting my socks and boots on with sand-covered feet was a bit of a challenge, but well worth it!

5:25pm: Jen and I arrive at Terminal A just as our flight starts boarding. We walk straight to security, no line. Jen set off the metal detector, but her wanding is minimal. We head to the gate and directly board the plane to head back... just like Joe's dream trip!

9:35pm: I arrive at home, a little later than expected, because our flight was a bit late. Hang out with Joe for a bit before I go to bed.

More Barcelona pictures.

PS. Happy Birthday Stephan!

24 hours of beards, boars & beach! Part 2: Boars, aka suckling pig in Barcelona

Wednesday, February 6th, 7:42am: It's pouring down rain and miserable in Lausanne. Jen and I board a train from Lausanne to Geneva airport to catch our 20 CHF flight to Barcelona. As some of you know, this trip was supposed to be taken by 8 of us, but 6 people (Jacqui, Joe, Adrian, Sai, Stephan & Kristen) managed to forget about a conference they had to attend at EPFL also occurring on Feb. 6th when we booked the tickets in November. So, in the end, only Jen and I were willing and able to head to Barcelona for lunch for some much loved suckling pig at El Yantar de la Ribera.

-checking in at a self-help kiosk in Geneva airport was a bit against the point of walking directly from train to plane and back, but it did produce this awfully guilt ridden photo-op. As the screen says, 'Any remaining passengers may check in later'

11:05am: Our plane lands in sunny Barcelona where Jen and I disembark to the tarmac like rockstars and realize that we forgot our sunglasses. We decide that it doesn't really matter because it 18 degrees Celsius and there's no need for a jacket!

noon: We arrive at Place Catalunya and head to a local bakery for a snack before lunch. We then take the metro and walk to the restaurant.

1:30pm: Lunch!

-Like always, I'm too embarassed to take pictures with the flash on, so all my pictures of the inside of the oven were coming out blurry. So I had the 'brilliant' idea to take a video of the oven master seasoning the meat and putting it back into the wood stove.

-Jen & I with our meals... Can you tell I'm excited!

3:00pm: Dessert. Jen and I decide to split a pastry and enjoy the basket of liquors... maybe a little too much...and then discussed what we should do in our last hour or so in Barcelona.... to the beach!

24 hours of beards, boars & beach! Part 1: Beards

February 5th 7:30pm: Jacqui, Joe and I scarf-down potato chips watching TV while waiting for Adrian and Stephan to arrive before we order pizza

8:45pm: mmm.... Raclette and Salami Passion Dominators from Domino's

9:15pm: beard activities commence....the before photos

....and then the shaving begins....
9:40pm: half way through shaving....chin hairs are missing...

10pm: I think they escaped from the Village People Summer camp....the construction worker, the leather man, and the police officer

10:10pm: Stephan and Joe....so sexy
10:15pm: the babyfaces have returned

Mega beard shave-off is tonight!

So tonight is the big beard shave-off! This is what hairy Joe looks likes as of Sunday night....

I forgot to get more updated photos of Stephan and Adrian, but I'm sure I'll get plenty of pictures tonight before, during and after the shave-off.

And then tomorrow's the big Barcelona lunch, except only Jen and I can go...the rest are stuck at some lame conference at EPFL....maybe I can convince the others tonight to skip the conference!!

And here's the beautiful view of the snow covered Alps out of my lab window at the moment... the camera really doesn't do it justice, but I thought I'd try....

One year later....

I did it! I actually have kept up the blog after one year! Congratulations to myself for actually keeping a new year's resolution for once!

In other updates, Paris sucked again, especially the first 4 hours. I arrived and stinky lady wasn't there, found her student who had no idea I was coming and then went to get re-acclimated with the microscope. I was just getting into the swing of things when I clicked on the wrong button and the microscope stage advanced toward the objective, crashing the objective into my slide and shattering it....think accidentally backing your car into a garage door after putting your car in Park... I don't know what retard set up this microscope, but in no way should that have ever happened... these things have sensors!! Then, an hour later, the lightbulb blew out, the student didn't know how to fix it, so I went shopping the next morning while stinky fixed it. thankfully, I knew what to expect this time, so I was prepared to be by myself and got to go shopping!
-The windowless room in Paris...this is where I was stuck for hours at a time

Then unfortunately in the middle of the night Saturday, Joe got sick with a 24-hour stomach bug so he was 'poopy' all day Sunday and we just hung out in the apartment. Of course, then I got the same thing, but worse Monday at bedtime... I've never been so sick and sleep-deprived in my life....it was horrible... of course, Joe got to sleep through the whole evening....
Carolyn at 10:30pm: I have a lot of gas and that 'I'm going to vomit' feeling in the pit of my stomach. I think I got what you had.
Joe: If you do get sick, I can't help you 'cause I just took my sleeping pill and you know I can't get up once I've taken that.
So, there I was vomiting and diahrrea-ing by myself, sleeping on the bathroom floor mat and crawling to and from the bathroom and the living room all night. Finally I kicked the bedroom door in at 7:30am and said, 'You need to get up now. I'm vomiting green liquid, I think it's just bile, but I need you to look online to see if I need to go to the hospital.' Oh my god. I wouldn't wish this on anybody....it was awful. Once Joe was awake he was great and got me some Gatorade to drink (and subsequently throw up) throughout the day. He even came home a couple times to check on me...how sweet ;) I think he felt guilty for giving it to me. And as usual, I push myself too hard and I should have just stayed home all day on Wednesday as well, but I went to work in the afternoon to finish up an abstract for my advisor anyway...I'm an idiot. I feel much better now, thank goodness.

This weekend, who knows...all i know is that if I haven't watched the season premiere of Lost by the end of today, I will be watching it tomorrow.

windowless Paris lab part deux

tomorrow I will be heading to Paris again to 'collaborate' with the crazy smelly woman. I swear that if the microscope and program aren't working, I'm going to scream, that is if I have a voice left to scream with... I started losing it Saturday night. I just hope that I don't go mute like I did last Christmas... I hate losing my voice and am hoping this doesn't become a yearly tradition. Anywho, this weekend was fairly relaxing. I stayed home on Saturday to do laundry while Sai took Joe and Stephan to Basel for an all day train-beer-american food extravatrain trip. Then on Sunday, Jacqui, Joe, Stephan and I helped install Jen's lights and hem and hang curtains.

Here's Joe and Stephan looking super manly... especially with their facial scruff. I then got yelled at for taking pictures because I scared them with the flash... so, this is all you get of Jen's awesome apartment.

So yes, tomorrow morning I head out to Paris. Hopefully I don't lose my mind like I did in December. If I do, I'll just go shopping.

cute little baby & boys beard update

For the first time in the 2 weeks since we've been back, I have a few minutes to blog. It's been quite crazy since I got back. All of a sudden my advisor is really interested in finishing off my first paper- probably because she realizes that I need to finish up my thesis in the next 3 months! So I've been busy keeping up with her corrections to the text and creating new figures...lots of real work time on the computer. It hasn't helped that I got a cold this past Monday and haven't slept well the past few nights thanks to my ears clogging up. But I'm feeling better today, so I'm happy to be on the road to recovery!
Yesterday was a busy day. I went to visit a colleague in Geneva who had her baby just after we flew to the states for Christmas. Marielle, the baby, is adorable and she and her mom, Margo, are doing great.

-Marielle

Then, I went directly from Geneva to the caveau in Lutry where Kristen organized an outing because she has a friend visiting from the states. It was fun to see everybody all together, especially Joe, Adrian and Stephan because they're all growing beards... It's funny to see them all so hairy.... here is how furry they currently are:

back to the grind after Christmas 'vacation'

As is always the case, Christmas vacation was a hectic 2 weeks of running errands, visiting friends and family, and gorging ourselves like american pigs. This year we even managed to squeeze in a job interview for Joe, bridal shower for me, lots of wedding planning crap and New Year's Eve in Philly with Adrian and Rachel. I'll post pictures as soon as I can...currently I can't figure out how to get the pictures off of our new Olympus camera which seems to not have an easy drop and drag configuration with my card reader... must bring cable next week to upload pictures. I do have a few pictures from my mom and Jillian gave me pictures from the shower which are right here!

cookie weekend!

Been pretty busy this week. Thursday night we went to the Great Escape for my friends' going away party... they're moving to Melbourne, Australia!! Then Friday night was Joe's Christmas party and his advisor's house... we stayed until 2:45am! It was nuts! Then Adrian cooked awesome chinese food for dinner on Saturday night and on Sunday I made cookies all day. Had I not dropped our camera into a waterfall, I could show you some pictures, but..... Joe bought a new camera online on Saturday!!! It is both waterproof and resistant to falls..... hopefully it will be Carolyn-proof as well!

Tonight we're all going to have a nice fancy dinner at my favorite Italian restaurant in Lausanne. I'm hoping that somebody brings their camera so that I can take a picture of everybody all dressed up!

A week in a windowless Paris lab....

That title doesn't quite conjure up the typical images one has of spending a week in Paris.....romantic strolls along the Seine, looking at fantastic art in world-renowned museums, or Joe's favorite image: transporting a baguette home on your bicycle wearing a striped shirt and beret. But no, unfortunately this trip was full of strange things happening, as they always do in big cities, and being stuck in a windowless microscope room in a lab that doesn't understand what the words 'good host' mean. The point of this trip was to work on a microscope and computer program that this woman, Catherine, has set up in her laboratory....as it turns out, she didn't quite tell the truth.

On my way to the hotel from the train station, I got my suitcase stuck in the entrance gate to the metro and then had an old man drop a 2L bottle of soda on my foot. Of course, a perfect start to my trip. Then when I arrived at the lab, Catherine, took me to lunch at the nasty hospital cafeteria and told me that the microscope was not working again (It didn't work the previous Friday, but then worked again Saturday and Sunday). Then her 'student' wouldn't help us try to get the program working because he was too busy. This seemed very odd to me because when my advisor tells me to do something or a visitor is coming, I have to drop everything and rearrange my schedule to work with this person and make sure they're okay both in and out of the lab. Turns out that she wasn't a professor or have a lab....she just works as a researcher in the lab and has 'students', meaning that she can be a co-advisor. But this also means that they didn't have to do a damn thing she says. And of course, Catherine didn't bother learning how to use the scope before I showed up. So Monday afternoon was a loss and I ended up looking at slides of brain sections with Catherine on a normal microscope. She then explained to me that she was too busy during the week to go to dinner with me because she had drawing class on Monday, gymnastics on Tuesday, theatre tickets Wednesday and dinner plans on Thursday, but maybe Friday I could go to her house. And nobody else in the lab cared I was around, so, night 1 of me eating alone.
Then Tuesday morning, we met with a different student who had been collaborating with Catherine on a project earlier in the year and had made a special trip across town to try and fix the scope, but of course, he couldn't fix it after playing with the software. Finally, Catherine decides to call technical support. YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!! She waited until I showed up to even think to do that!! I was so pissed. But since the European tech support wasn't answering the phone and the US tech support didn't open until 2pm, I blew off steam by taking a shopping trip to Montmartre for fabric for wedding decorations. When I got back, Catherine called the tech support in the states and then promptly shoved the phone in my face saying that she couldn't understand the guy because he had an accent, which he didn't. So there I am, on the phone with tech support in Catherine's office discussing a microscope that's in a room 50 yards down the hallway because there's no phone or internet in the room with the microscope. After explaining to the nice man, Russ, on the phone that I wasn't familiar with the setup because I came to the lab specifically to use the setup and running down the hallway twice to check on settings, I told him that I'd get internet in the room. Finally, it was hooked up to the internet so that I could 'live-chat' with Russ on the computer and let him check out the settings himself through the internet. Turns out that there was nothing wrong with the software settings, but that the sensor wasn't touching the stage! It's equivalent to trying to figure out why you can't transfer your music to your ipod and so you mess around with the itunes software when actually, you forgot to plug in your ipod to the computer....I was so pissed. After all that, I did some measurements on my sections and then went to dinner alone, again.
Wednesday, student #1 showed up, late, and showed us how to count. Of course, Catherine decides to wear a sleeveless sweater and expose her disgustingly smelly armpits (she also wore the same clothes 2 days in a row...ugh!). I seriously almost vomited when she reached across me at one point. I don't know what it is with crazy old women.... anyway, the setup finally worked and I was finally able to do what I was sent their to do. I ended up all in a tizzy that day and decided to treat myself to a nice dinner at a restaurant that Joe and I went to when we were in Paris in 2005. It was great, but again, dinner alone with the Newsweek.
Thursday and Friday I sat in the windowless room from 9am-6pm counting neurons to make up for lost time. It sucked being in the room because the confocal was also in there, which means AC is on and it's cold in the room and of course I forgot my ipod, so I turned on the radio when I was in there alone, only to have it turned off by the assholes that came in there to use the confocal.... so annoying! And again, dinner alone both nights.
Finally on Saturday, I took counts in the morning and then met with Catherine and my advisor, Stephanie, at 1pm to discuss what I did during the week. Stephanie and I then got tea at a nearby brasserie and discussed the crap that happened during the week and how her conference went. Then I was finally free to go find Stéphanie and Manu somewhere in the city...they had gone to EuroDisney and to a boat show and were staying with their friends Pierre and Matilde. So I caught up with them, we went shopping a bit, and then, finally, I went to dinner with living, breathing, talking people!!
Sunday, I checked out of the hotel and went over to Pierre and Matilde's apartment and then we walked over to the famous cemetery, Père-Lachaise. Most of you probably only know of it as the place where Jim Morrison is buried. But there are other famous french people buried there and so we walked around until the weather got bad. Had a quick lunch at Pierre and Matilde's and then we drove back to Lausanne, where Joe was waiting for me to eat a late dinner that he had made.... it was so nice to be home!

Marrakesh weekend with Joe & Adrian

This was quite an experience that I'm still trying to figure out how to explain, plus I'm actually busy at work today. So, until I have time, here's the link to my flickr pictures, which are still not titled.... click me!

Joe's back and Thanksgiving feast!

What an awesome couple of days! Joe got back safely and unfortunately late and missing his bag from his 2 week trip to the States. He missed his connecting flight in Newark, so he ended up flying via Paris to get home on Thursday, but he got home safe and sound and tired. Then, while Joe stopped into lab for a bit, Adrian and I went to Aligro to buy supplies for the Thanksgiving feast on Sunday. I then made dinner for Joe and we hung out until he got tired.

Friday night, we went to dinner at Cafe des Bouchers and ended up sitting next to the reigning Swiss National Sumo champion. Turns out he's actually of British decent and talked our ears off for our entire dinner. He was an interesting character.

On Saturday, Jacqui, Adrian and I made the brine solution for the turkey and then drove to Lutry to pick up the turkey I special ordered at the butcher shop. Isn't it beautiful!

We then stopped by the caveau to pick up some wine for dinner. Pascal helped us pick a nice wine to go with dinner. We then dropped off the bird at Jacqui's and picked up stuff at my apartment (crock pot, 3 bowls of stuffing, etc). I then washed the turkey and put it in the brine to soak overnight. Joe & I stayed home that night and Joe made me dinner and then we decorated our christmas tree.

Sunday morning I woke up at 5:30am to get my stuff together to catch the first metro at 5:59am to Jacqui's apartment. There I was looking like Aunt Jemima pulling a waterlogged 8 kilo (think 18 pound) freezing cold turkey out of the brine. Jacqui and I then patted the bird dry and started on the stuffing while the bird sat at room temperature for 2 hours. I then finished making the stuffing, stuffed the bird, trussed a bird for the first time ever and stuck it in the oven! We then cleaned up the apartment, set the table for dinner, got the veggies ready and showered while basting the turkey every half hour for the next 4 hours. We started the first Lord of the Rings movie (we watched all 3 yesterday!) around 12:30 and then lunch started around 1:30 and everything everybody brought was amazing! The turkey was super moist and delicious...so much better than last year's turkey. It was the best turkey I've ever had, and I'm not just saying that because I made it... it was an amazing bird and the brining made it taste absolutely magnificent. Click here for more pictures from our Thanksgiving feast day! We then all vegged out in front of the tv until 9pm watching all 3 Lord of the Rings. Sai was supposed to make us all turkey curry for dinner, but we were all too stuffed from lunch to even consider eating another full meal. We'll be postponing it until later in the week when all of our stomachs have recovered.

Joe comes back tomorrow!

Joe's nearly 2 week trip to the States is almost over and he'll finally be flying back today, returning bright & early tomorrow morning. yeah! I can't wait... this is the longest we've been apart for a very long time. and he'll be back just in time to help with the final preparations for Sunday's Thanksgiving dinner!! I've been working on the schedule of events to prepare the turkey and Jacqui's apartment for the festivities. I'll be up early Saturday to prepare the brine solution before Jacqui and I pick up the bird at the butcher shop. And on Sunday, we'll be up super early to get the bird out of the brine, stuffed and into the oven. Hopefully this year I won't dry out the turkey so badly... I'll definitely be using a meat thermometer this year instead of just guessing like I did last year...pop-up timers aren't the standard over here....it'll be another adventure this weekend, like usual!

Laurent is on my Sh!tlist....

UPDATE: These Boots are Made for Walkin' was totally in Full Metal Jacket!!!

We had a nice girl's night dinner last night, but unfortunately, quite a few of the girls canceled because they were sick. BlindTest last night ended up being a bit crappy, and as I predicted, the red-headed girl kicked our ass, but we held on for 2 of the 3 movie rounds....almost winning them. For one of the first songs played, we had correctly written down Chariots of Fire, a bunch of the girls knew it, and were the first ones up, but Jacqui pulled me down because she thought it was Black Beauty! We weren't off to a very good start ;) Jacqui got a big string of movies right and I got a couple, too, most likely because I was the only american playing. We did manage to get correct Platoon, Beetlejuice, Flashdance, Footloose, Wizard of Oz, Crying Game, Young Guns, and some others that I forget... I think we had 10 or 11 points. At one point, Lolly started screaming at me 'Big Fish, Big Fish, Big Fish, Big Fish' but I didn't remember the song being from Big Fish and couldn't really understand her, so then she yelled again, louder, 'Pulp Fiction'....whoops.... my bad... in my defense it was loud in the bar ;) Then Jacqui went home early with a headache and so I lost my movie partner, who like myself, appears to have spent her childhood watching mindless movies like I did. I almost threw my board across the room at Laurent, the bartender in charge, when he didn't give me Saturday Night Fever. I was the first one up, standing on my freaking chair, but of course, he was still fussing with the stereo and didn't see who was the first one up....We got pissed off again when Lolly said Full Metal Jacket when he played 'These Boots Were Made for Walkin''....he said 'maybe?' and we got a big old zero for that, too. then for the last round titled '?' he started playing normal music again and so I turned in my board and left.... so not cool. It was a little strange playing without Joe & Sai around because 1) they're really good at playing this game and 2) I was the only crazy freak at our table jumping up and down and making not so nice gestures to Laurent. Oh well. Maybe next week when the theme is 'decades'.

And Adrian, Weekend at Bernie's wasn't the correct answer for the first song played....you are soooo disowned....

still keeping busy!

well, I survived week 1 of Joe's trip to the states. Went climbing at the indoor gym a bunch of times and had friends over for dinner on Tuesday and Saturday nights. I made my yummy lemon rosemary (from my balcony garden!) chicken for the girls on Tuesday and then I made fondue on Saturday night for Adrian, Stephan & Jacqui. Stephan brought his Mahjong set and taught Jacqui and I how to play. Adrian is already a master player. It's a lot of fun and is similar to Rummy, so it was easy to pick up. I also started taking dance again, which was fun, but tiring because my balance was totally out of whack and I kept tipping over...very frustrating. I even got Mayumi to go out for a small beer with me after class! She's so fun. Last night Adrian, Stephan and I watched Return of the Jedi at Jacqui's and she made dinner for us... yummy pizza & potato wedges.
Tonight I've organized a girl's night at the Great Escape for us to play Blindtest. It should be a lot of fun because the theme tonight is 'Classic Movies' so instead of guessing the name of the singer, we have to guess the movie. I'm feeling confident, but like usual, I'll probably get my butt kicked by the red head girl who knows every song ever played! I'm sure there will be plenty of pictures taken for me to post tomorrow ;)

keeping myself busy while Joe's at a conference

Joe left for a conference and interviews super early on Saturday morning (he woke up at 4:30am!) thanks to George Bush delaying the time change a week to 'save energy.' Riiight. So instead of catching the Geneva-Newark flight at 9:15, Joe had to catch it at 8:15! But, thanks to his upgraded silver elite status on Continental, he didn't have to wait in line like the rest of the losers (like me). He's been teasing me about separating our reservation at Christmas so that he can get upgraded and leave me all alone in coach...boohoo.

So after I got back from the airport I went straight to work at 9am and finished my experiment. Then I went straight to the gym for indoor rock climbing with the usual crew and then home to shower and off to tandem with Stéphanie. After tandem, Adrian graciously offered to make me dinner... more yummy Chinese food! And finally, around 10:30 I got to bed to rest some for my super busy Sunday.

Sunday morning I woke up at 5:30am to get ready and catch the 6:45am train from Lausanne to Zurich to meet my friend Vanessa from the german exchange I did in high school. I haven't seen her since 2000 when she met up with me and my choir on our european tour! It was really nice to see her and catch up over brunch and walking around the city. Then at 1pm I left Zurich for Lausanne and realized that since I had the day pass, I could go all the way to Geneva and go to Burger King! So I texted everybody to see if they were interested in me bringing back BK, but nobody was in the mood for a semi-cold whopper. I couldn't believe how much time I spent on the train yesterday, but it gave me a chance to put a big dent in the book I borrowed from Stephan, A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini- the same guy that wrote The Kite Runner. After I got home, Jacqui and I decided to go up to the Great Escape for a drink, which was also an excuse for me to watch some American football. Unfortunately, the good game between the original Golden Boy (Tom Brady) and Peyton Manning, was the late game that started at 10pm, but I was just too exhausted and we ended up leaving before the game even started. After I got home I had a chance to talk to Joe for a bit while he was watch the big game at a sports bar....so not fair! He has one of his 2 talks tomorrow, so good luck Joe!
